ODESSA ROTARY CLUB INTERNATIONAL
PROJECT
Odessa Rotary Club
partnered with an international humanitarian organization, Care
Highway, to provide support to an orphanage in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
The Elim Orphanage houses 109 children, from infants to teenagers.
Rotarians have
made two trips to Nuevo Laredo to take clothing, toys, and personal
hygiene items to the children. Of great need at the orphanage was
improved drinking water, as many of the younger children were
frequently sick from the poor quality water. The club purchased and
had installed water filters that chlorinate water at the tap on all
five faucets in the orphanage.
The club also
provided six months’ worth of propane to the orphanage, which is used
to heat the facility. Large quantities of eggs, and fresh fruits and
vegetables were purchased on the first visit.
On both trips,
Rotarians and Care Highway volunteers also made visits to deliver
clothing to a shanty town, a community where there is extreme poverty
and families live in shacks and sleep in holes they have dug in the
ground.
The club plans to
provide additional support to the families living in the shanty towns
for future projects.
